The hidden treasure of the Aniene Valley

Founded by the Suffenates, Trebula was conquered by the Romans at the end of the 4th century BC. And at the beginning of the first century a. C. was elected to the Town Hall and became important, protected by the noble family of the Plautii Silvani who boasted close ties with the imperial family of Augustus.

Large stretches of streets, a paved square limited by a square-shaped wall (probably the Forum) and a series of buildings pertinent to a domus dating between the Republican age and the end of the Empire, are preserved and now visible next to the structures Of a spa complex consisting of a series of environments, the most important of which is an apsed hall whose walls were covered with marble and the floor, with white-black mosaic, was decorated with mythological scenes and sea monsters; A stretch was detached and placed in front of the Proserpina fountain at Villa d’Este in Tivoli.

Situated in the heart of the Aniene valley, Trebula Suffenàs is located next to the town of Ciciliano in the province of Rome, just a few kilometres from Tivoli. It is an ideal setting for an excursion in combination with a visit to Hadrian’s Villa or Villa D’Este.

Discovering the archeological park of Trebula Suffenas

Casa Manni is a historic residence built over the ancient spa resorts in the archaeological park of Trebula Suffenas. The complex stands on a hill 600 meters above sea level at the slopes of the hill on which Ciciliano rises, in the Santa Maria Maddalena Hospital, south-west of Passo della Fortuna, on the right of Empolana road (Km 13,200 from Tivoli).

The old town of the ancient Roman town of Trebula Suffenàs is set in an oak and holm patch and extends for about 4 hectares along a completely terraced terrain. The archaeological park includes a hole, administrative offices, spas, three basalt Roman streets, mosaics and the remains of a perfectly preserved temple.
